So Fanime was amazing this weekend, I was the signless/sufferer in this picture and my lovely girlfriend was the disciple (anemone) :D if anyone else has pictures of the two of us in groups or with our buddies the grand highblood (th1sisstupid) and mayor (vesden) it’d be awesome if you could send them my way. Thank you moss-piglets for this pic!
SCARLET-BODIED WASP MOTH (Cosmosoma myrodora) and toxic sex
Safe sex for scarlet-bodied wasp moths means avoiding being eaten by predators while mating. So, the male moth, protects his mate during courtship, by covering her with a veil of poison, says William Conner, professor of biology at Wake Forest University. The moths are immune to the toxin, but the poisonous cloud prevents predators.
The scarlet-bodied wasp moth, native to Florida, is the only insect known to transfer a chemical defense in this way.
The caterpillar of the wasp moth feeds on a non-toxic plant, climbing hempweed but when is is ready to mate, the male changes his eating habitsand eats the poisonous dogfennel plant.
The male moth extracts toxins called “pyrrolizidine alkaloids” from the plant. The small red and black moth stores the toxins in a special pouch located on his underbelly.
Once he has ingested the toxin he is no longer tasty to his common predators, particularly spiders and bats. After gathering the poison, the moth goes in search of a female. When he finds a female, they mate for nine hours. But, before mating, the moth releases the toxin like a cloud of miniature confetti that sticks to her. The toxin protects her while she’s mating and while she lays her eggs. The female moth then passes the toxin to her eggs. The toxin deters egg-eating insects like ants and ladybugs from devouring her young.

A Humming-bird Hawk-moth feeds from a flower. Butterflies and moths have been baffled by this year’s extreme weather, with many species appearing at unusual times, Butterfly Conservation said. But while the hot, dry spring and one of the warmest autumns on record saw butterflies on the wing from early March all the way through to December, the cold damp summer saw many species struggle. The charity’s Big Butterfly Count this year revealed numbers of common species were down 11% in the face of a miserable summer. The poor results followed the unusually hot spring, in which species such as the pearl bordered fritillary and the grizzled skipper emerged weeks ahead of normal. The Big Three. Luna, Polyphemus, and Cecropia silk moths. These are the largest moths we have around here (Central New York), with wingspans ranging from four to six inches. These ones were all around five. Awesome moths of fluffiness.
Had 3 moths hatch out today!
And I thought since I post so many pictures of them,
This time I’ll add in a little fun fact.
So…Here are photo comparisons of the male and female cecropia moths.
The top picture is the MALE - His antennae are very large, like big feathers.
The bottom picture is the FEMALE - Skinny antennae.
If they were next to each other,
The male would be a little bit smaller,
But if you ever find just one,
Just look at the antennae!
*the lighting might be different, but all wings/markings/colors are the same.
If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message!
Pictures by me :)
